What Is Bromelain Used For in Industry? A Guide for Buyers and Resellers

Which industries buy bromelain, what each one specifies, the forms and packs it ships in, what drives cost-in-use, and what to send with a wholesale quote request.

Bromelain is a protein-splitting enzyme taken from pineapple stem. The same raw material is sold into food processing, personal care and pharmaceutical production, and each of those buyers asks for a different grade, document set and pack. This guide is for manufacturers, distributors and resellers who need to match the right material to the customer before they request a quote.

One enzyme, three main trade lanes

On the producer side, bromelain is marketed into three lanes. Food industry buyers use it for protein processing: it hydrolyses large proteins into small peptides and amino acids. Cosmetics makers add it to skin-care products for cleansing and exfoliation. Pharmaceutical producers use it as a raw material for enzyme-containing products.

For a reseller this matters: one material can serve customers in several industries, but each customer will ask for a grade and paperwork that fit its own market. Sort the inquiry by lane first, then talk about grade and price.

What each type of buyer asks for

Meat and seafood processors ask how the enzyme behaves in their marinade, injection brine or tumble cycle, and how they stop it before the texture goes soft. Breweries ask about chill-haze control without losing foam. Protein-hydrolysis, gelatin and savoury-ingredient plants ask about the degree of hydrolysis and how the reaction is stopped. Supplement and nutraceutical makers ask about the activity unit, purity, microbial limits and stability in a capsule or tablet. Cosmetics and oral-care formulators ask about compatibility with their base and about handling the powder safely.

Each of these has its own application page on this site, with the process questions to settle before ordering.

Forms, packs and storage

Bromelain is supplied as a light yellow to tan powder. Packs are 25 kg fiber drums or custom packaging, with a minimum order of 25 kg, and shelf life is 24 months when the pack stays sealed and is kept cool and dry.

Producer labels usually give a suggested addition range and then say plainly that the final level is set by the actual production conditions. Treat any printed dose as a starting point for a plant trial, not as a recipe.

What really drives cost-in-use

The lowest price per kilogram is rarely the cheapest option. Cost-in-use depends on activity per gram, the dose that works in your process, the effect on yield and rework, handling losses, and how quickly technical support shortens validation. A more concentrated grade can cost more per kilogram but need a lower inclusion rate.

Compare offers on the same activity unit and the same test method. If two quotes state activity in different units, ask for both values on the lot certificate before you compare prices.

Notes for distributors and resellers

Keep one activity unit system across your own labels and price lists, so your customers can compare lots. Ask for the certificate of analysis for the specific lot, the technical data sheet and the safety data sheet with every shipment, and check that the grade you resell matches the use your customer has in mind: a food-processing customer and a cosmetics maker will not ask for the same documents.

For repeat business, agree the pack, the activity grade and the documents once, then quote each order against that fixed specification.

What to send with a quote request

Send the product or application, the activity grade or unit system you work to (if known), the quantity per order or per year, the pack you need and the destination country. If you resell, add the markets you sell into. We reply within 24 hours with a grade suggestion, a quote and a sample with COA.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which industries buy bromelain?

Mainly food processors (meat tenderising, brewing, protein hydrolysis, gelatin and collagen peptides), supplement and pharmaceutical producers, and cosmetics makers for cleansing and exfoliating skin-care products.

What pack sizes are available?

25 kg fiber drums or custom packaging, with a minimum order of 25 kg. Prices are quoted per order.

How should I compare two bromelain quotes?

Compare them on the same activity unit and test method, then on cost-in-use: the dose that works in your process, yield and handling losses. A concentrated grade can cost more per kilogram and still be cheaper to use.

I am a distributor. What should I agree with a supplier?

Fix the activity grade, the unit system, the pack and the documents per lot (certificate of analysis, technical data sheet, safety data sheet), then quote each repeat order against that specification.

Is industrial bromelain the same as a bromelain supplement?

No. This site supplies bromelain as a raw material to manufacturers. The finished product, its claims, dosage and regulatory classification are decided by the manufacturer. This page gives no medical or consumer dosage advice.
